Abstract:

Shot peening beneficial effects on fatigue life of mechanical components are well known. However, there are some reports in the literature that indicate inappropriate shot peening parameters tend to reduce the fatigue life. It is therefore, the purpose of this study to find a logical quantitative justification for these observations. Using finite element method, a dynamic elastic-plastic simulation of shot peening was presented. Effect of shot velocity and size on surface morphology after shot peening were examined. Fatigue crack initiation life calculation of shot peened specimens revealed that beneficial effect of shot peening significantly vanishes in the case of high velocities and bigger shots.

Study and Simulation of Shot peening Effect on Fatigue Life of a Powder Forged Connecting rod

Shot peening applies a residual compressive stress field (RCSF) on the surface of parts. It also shifts “crack nucleation sites” to sub-surface locations. A nondestructive method of measuring the stresses, Sin2ψ was utilized here and the stress values introduced to Ansys software. For this purpose, uniform stress in all directions was applied on the con rod. Loading on the rod in Ansys had thre...

Fatigue crack initiation life prediction of railroad wheels

A new multiaxial high-cycle fatigue initiation life prediction model for railroad wheels is proposed in this paper. A general fatigue damage analysis methodology for complex mechanical components is developed and applied to the wheel/rail rolling contact fatigue problem. A 3-D elasto-plastic finite element model is used for stress analysis. A submodeling technique is used to achieve both comput...

Manual shot peening intensity and coverage effects on fatigue performance of aluminum alloy

Shot peening has been developed to enhance the fatigue strength of metallic parts. However, improper shot peening can decrease the fatigue life due to induced high surface roughness and residual tensile stress. The effectiveness of the manual shot peening process is accomplished by the control of the process parameters to provide a uniform intensity and coverage throughout the work piece. This ...

Effect of Shot Peening Treatment on Forging Die Life

The aim of this paper was to study the effects of die life through shot peening treatments on AISI H13 steel, and tests were performed to study the influential parameters of the shot peening process. To evaluate the effects of microstructure and the die life of AISI H13 steel after steel shot peening processes, we conducted and evaluated roughness tests, micro hardness and wear tests, and SEM m...

Effects of Microstructure on Room Temperature Fatigue Crack Initiation and Short Crack Propagation in Udimet

An assessment of the effects of microstructure on room temperature fatigue crack initiation and short crack propagation in a Ni-base superalloy is presented. The assessment was carried out on microstructural variants of U720Li, including as-received U720Li, U720Li-LG (large grain variant) and U720Li-LP (large intragranular coherent γ′ variant). Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature...
